First thing’s first, take a look at that cover. I adore that cover, it’s absolutely beautiful and is possibly my favorite thing about the entire book. I could look at this for days. Hell, I want a post of this one.
I know, I have a problem when it comes to covers. I love them. Moving on.
Now, the idea of acne and asthma being early signs that you’re actually part mythological creature? Brilliant, I love that idea. I wish it had give a little more backstory to Allyson herself and her life regarding this before jumping right into the whole “hey, you’re a half-dragon” bit, but I still think the concept of it and the fact it was a thing was totally cool. I don’t have acne myself, and I never have, but if I got to be half-dragon out of it I might change my mind about being happy I never had it.
(Though, not all aspects of this whole dragon thing look thrilling, lemme tell you. Especially some of the bits about fire-breathing. Poor Allyson.)
What I really liked about this story were the bits where Allyson and Beth were alone and interacting together, be it scheming, talking, or freaking out about something, I really enjoyed them together. Allyson also has a pretty good sense of humor, and some of the things she said I was able to find myself going, “Huh, yeah, she’s right.” That being said, there were a few times where some of the humor was misplaced and it didn’t come off right.
The thing I think I wish for the most in the whole story was a little more meat in the beginning, plus a little more time between some of the changes for things to sink in. I had some trouble keeping up later on in the book due to a sudden realization about a certain character, and then the next thing I knew they were basically no longer part of the story. I was a little thrown off and had to go back and read to figure out where it is I ended up getting lost. The ending left some to be desired, too.
All in all, not too bad. The best parts were in the middle, the beginning and the ending just left me kind of confused. I probably won’t be continuing the series if there are supposed to be more, it’s really just not in my vein of reading.
Thanks for reading!
