First, I’d just like to say that, wow, that was a wild ride. This was my first book from Alexandra Bracken and, to say in the very least, I am far from disappointed in my choice. Historical fiction is always a yes for me, but now I realize I also have a love for time-travel and a guilty pleasure in “forbidden” romances. Lucky for me, this hit all three of them. My biggest regret would have to be the fact I didn’t wait for all of the books to be out so I don’t have to wait to see what happens.

The writing style in this book is fantastic, once I had enough time to sit down and do more than cram a couple pages in (which, incidentally, were only the prologue and bits of the first chapter — these chapters are fairly lengthy), I flew through this book despite its almost-500-page status. I did find myself getting a little lazy with my reading somewhat mid-way, closer to the end, but once things started to pick up again, I couldn’t put the book down. The ending had me in tatters for a little while, I was frantic thinking about the fact it might end like that and I’d have to wait roughly a year (read: forever) for the next book to come out, but thank the book gods that wasn’t quite a thing. I’m still anticipating the next book with extreme fervor, but not with a broken heart like I had thought I might be.

I’ll admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of Etta for a few moments here and there, but whenever she was around Nicholas, I couldn’t get enough of her. Probably because Nicholas, by far, was my favorite character in the entire book. I hope big things happen for that guy, and for god’s sake, please don’t let him be killed off in any sense or form. I will rage havoc if he does. And be pretty damn pissed.

All in all, really a great read, especially if you like tidbits of history flying past you to enjoy and a romance that seemingly just can’t be for one reason or another. I can’t wait for the next one, this is going to be torture.

I will most definitely be getting myself a hard copy of this one once I allow myself the money to purchase physical books again. (Wish me luck. I want a physical copy so bad so I can display that cover on my bookshelf. I love it.)
