Top 5 Wednesday | Book Trends I’m Tired Of

Fair warning, this week it’s just a lot of me screeching. I had a good day at work and I received a lot of coffee.

I’m also slightly medicated because of a cold, so.

There’s your warning. Let’s GO.

Top Five Wednesday is a weekly meme created by GingerReadsLainey and hosted Sam from Thoughts On Tomes over on Goodreads. This week’s topic is top 5 trends I’m tired of seeing. Understand the need to scream yet?

Unequal characters, despite both of them being main characters. I love a good kickass female character, don’t get me wrong, but when a guy is the sniveling, weak one instead of the female being your usual damsel-in-distress, it just makes me mad! Why can’t they both be totally badass? Why can’t they both be smart, cool, awesome people?

It’s happening far less and less the more books I read, thankfully, but when it pops up again I just want to rip my hair out.

Love triangles. WHY ARE THESE STILL A THING ALL OVER THE PLACE. TAKE 2008 AND PUT IT BACK, KTHX. BEGONE.

Or, like. At least make it a love octagon or something.

(What do you mean it’s called a harem? I call it what I want.)

Insta-love. I really don’t think I need to scream about this one any more than I have in the past. U get me.

Romance where it’s not even needed. I understand sometimes romance is a given, yes, okay. Especially where it’s central to the plot or it develops over a long time-span in the series. I could give examples for that, but spoilers. When it seems to be there just to be there, though? No, stop. Please. We need more friendship and rivalry. We don’t always need romance. (Although I love the enemies-to-lovers trope like nobody’s business, ngl.)

A particular instance I have to say, even though I’ve only read the first book, is Six of Crows. Now, I’m not saying any romance happens (because, really, you have to read the book to get why), so no spoilers, but it seems to have a very clear pairing-off of characters set up as soon as we’re given all six of our protags. Sure, one of them I ship to the ends of the earth (and it’s the one without clear lines), but just … why all six? Why? I need to read Crooked Kingdom and see what’s up.

Changing the cover when releasing the last book in the series. LOOKING AT YOU, GONE AND ACROSS THE UNIVERSE AND COUNTLESS OTHERS. STOP DOING THIS. Especially when I liked the covers to begin with. It just hurts my soul.

Bitching = end.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I actually love Love Triangles. Like real ones. In which all three people end up together 😀 (The other one is technically a love V, which I guess doesn’t really come off the tongue as well)

  2. Completely agree. The first one of your list is the only one I don’t mind that much, all other four really upset me. I stopped reading YA because I cannot stand how romance is portrayed. All those formulas (unnecessary romance, love triangles, insta-love) are generally always present and I just can’t take it anymore.
