Should I Attempt YouTube? || The Struggle of Branching Out in Media

Now, I want to preface this with why I even am thinking about this in the first place by saying that I’ve been pondering starting a YouTube channel to supplement my blog since I first started back in (checks archives) 2015. I never wanted to go fully into that form of media, because I much prefer writing things than I do speaking.

In fact, I hate speaking. With a passion. Comparable to that of a seventh circle of hell kind of burning.

Unless the seventh circle is ice? I can’t remember. My passion, though, burns.

In fact, I have social anxiety, and this has hindered me since I was a child. I wasn’t diagnosed until much later in life, so I had a lot of trouble with adults just thinking I was shy and needed pushing. (I did not need pushing. I needed beta blockers and methods to cope, which, the former I don’t think I could have as a child anyway. The latter would have helped, though.)

Now that I am older, though, I’ve been told I need to push my limits. And I have, kind of. However, I was told that one of these ways to get around and help myself would be to speak to a camera. I never had to put it in YouTube, sure, but I figured if I was going to do it, I might as well make something I’d want to use for my blog.

Tried it, turns out I hate it more than I hate public speaking. Don’t ask me how. I shake and stutter just as much to a camera as I do to a room of people.

But. BUT. I’ve grown since 2015, just a smidgen, and I’ve debated attempting at branching out again into YouTube, if only to do videos on things like hauls and longer discussions that I don’t necessarily want to write a post up for, ya feel?

The question is, though, is it worth it? I love blogging, I really do. I don’t like cameras. But I want to branch out, if it is a worthy endeavor.

I’ve seen other bloggers branch out into YouTube (I follow quite a few of them), and it’s working out for them, but I also follow bloggers who have done it and decided to stick to blogging for one reason or another. I believe both ways have their merits, I’m simply struggling to figure out which one would be best for me. Insight from people who have done it is probably what I really need, but.

I suppose I could just attempt it and decide from there. I won’t be gauging it on how many people watch the video (if any), rather on how much I enjoy doing it.

Would a few months be a good timeframe to judge? A year?

How many times would I post? What else would I post, if I chose to do half-blog-half-vlog?

Questions, questions.

If you’ve made it this far and you have any words to offer, I’m all for any sort of thought or insight I can get.

Anyway, that’s my ramble for the day. Thanks for reading! And we’ll see if I follow through and bother with a YouTube channel or not.
