Read Me at the Beach

Living in Florida, I’m never too far from the beach. In fact, I’m surrounded by the beach, because I live just off the Gulf of Mexico.

Unfortunately, I am very much not a beach person. I hate the ocean. Like, a lot.

So, when my family decides to have a family day at the beach? I slap on some SPF 50+, throw on my shades, and open a book, and that’s my day at the beach. I get some really good reading done!

I also read books that may be inappropriate for the beach, but that’s what makes it fun. 😉

Following that train of thought, I decided to throw together a little list of books that may belong in your hands while on the beach … and a few that may not.

Read These at the Beach!

we were liars

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Okay–this one might kind of fit. Maybe a little. I think I’ve seen this on a “read during the summer” list before, and that’s what made me think of reading it at the beach. But, hey! Summer = beach (if you don’t live in Florida/California/somewhere outside the US that has ace beaches), so I’m on the right track. Right?

Plus, I did read this one at the beach. So there.

dead to the world

Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris

I think this series is just one of those series that can be read anywhere, and they just happen to fit into whatever it is you’re doing. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy reading these as much as I am (even if I’m reading them slower than molasses), but man, do I enjoy reading these wherever I am at the time.

Sun

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

This one mentions a beach at some point, so take makes it eligible, right?

I think it’s good for the beach.

teeth

Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz

Water, fish, scales. Beach-worthy! Just be ready for the pain if you happen to finish it on the beach. Good thing you’ll probably be wearing sunglasses!

beauty queens

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

If you’re up for a little more satire, try this hunker. Bray’s writing style and humor isn’t for everyone, but, this one’s got a Lord of the Flies theme going to it.

life and other near-death experiences

Life and Other Near-Death Experiences by Camille Pagan

And, humor! There are islands and beaches in this one, and it’s just plain funny. Specifically for those who aren’t in YA but want something on this list that isn’t Sookie Stackhouse, here you go!

Of course, you can always just read whatever you want instead. I’m not judging!

If you have any recommendations for me, feel free to let them rip. I’m supposed to go to the beach this weekend, soooo…

Thanks for reading!

  1. SPF 50+ is a must! I live probably 10 minutes from the beach and probably only go 1-2 times per year 😀

I have very strong reasons for that (1) I am very pale and even SPF 50 won’t prevent those nasty sunburns, (2) I always feel like I should be doing something else but laying down and (3) sand ends up in every crease of my books! (not acceptable!) ❤

Otherwise, I love beach off the season without 100 tourists stealing my best spots!

    1. Yes!! I had a bad mishap in high school with low-SPF sunblock (worst sunburn of my LIFE), so now it must at least be 50 and I have to reapply it after however many minutes the bottle says. 😅

Good and relatable reasons! Esp the sand. I am not a fan of sand for many reasons. That’s one of them.
