Top Five Wednesday is a weekly meme created by GingerReadsLainey and hosted Sam from Thoughts On Tomes over on Goodreads. This week’s topic is top 5 books without romance.
I was only slightly surprised at how difficult it was to find books without romance in general, since romance tends to be in most YA books and I usually read YA. I’m excited for this one, because, while I like romance, I want to read more books without it as a plot device.
5 – The Lord of the Flies
Possibly my favorite classic, there’s no romance to speak of in this one.
4 – 172 Hours on the Moon
No romance, more of a horror!
3 – A Monster Calls
This one was just plain sad. But, no romance!
2 – Between Shades of Gray
I don’t recall any romance in this one, but we can chalk that up to the fact it’s about a girl in a concentration camp during WWII. Whoops I lied, there’s some romance in this one! I had forgotten about it. Shhh you didn’t see anything.
1 – The Martian
The only romance in this one is between Mark and his potatoes. And even that one can’t last. (There might be, like, a smidgen of side-romance but it’s basically not even there, so I’m counting this.)
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading!
Awesome list! I want to read A Monster’s Call so badly!

Great list! I really loved your comment about the only romance in The Martian being between Mark and his potatoes, made my entire day! It’s also a great book same for A Monster Calls! 🙂

LOL Shades of Gray was my honorable mention this week, and I noted that there was romance. But let’s be honest… it’s not much of one. How CAN it be in this situation? It’s not a main focus and the author doesn’t make either of them “swoon-worthy” or anything like that, so I just think we can call it “a little stronger than friendship” and call it a day. 🙂

Works great for me! I can’t even remember it happening, myself, but it’s also been a good while since I’ve read the book soooo (makes me feel better about NOT remembering it, though!) :’D But yes, thank you for the comment!
