Mini Media Reviews // The End of the F***ing World (Season Two), The Witcher (Season One), Pokemon Shield

Man, been a while since I’ve done one of these! And it’s less because of media consumption (because, boy, I’ve been binging SO MANY THINGS) and more because I just wasn’t feeling the writing bug. I am now, though, so we’re going to dial it back a bit and catch up on some things I loved and honestly am still thinking about. Like. A lot.

A lot.

The End of the F***ing World (Season Two)

the end of the f***ing world 2

So, I don’t think I loved this second season as much as I loved the first, but, to be fair, it did have a lot to live up to after how much I loved that first season. I won’t say I didn’t like it, because that would be a flat out lie. I liked it A LOT. A LOT.

I really liked the new character, I really liked the way the second season tied pretty neatly into the first, and I really like how they kept us guessing on some of the plot points even when we were pretty sure we knew what was going on. It was well played out and it gave me a lot of the feelings the first season did, maybe with a little bit more of a mature edge just because of the slight time-skip…

But it wasn’t the first season.

Now, it’s really hard to find accompanying GIFs of this one without potentially spoiling some things about the show, as short as it is, so forgive me for not including any in the post this time. We’ll just take the movie poster and call it a day.

(I do wonder, though, is the story over now? It wrapped up pretty damn cleanly… no season 3 on the horizon? I don’t even know where it would go if there WAS a season 3. Hmm…)

The Witcher (Season One)

the witcher

Ah, yes, the show that has everyone flooding into the Witcher fandom to understand what the blessed HELL is happening in the plot that they kind of poorly planned out, if I’m being brutally honest.

I? Kind of absolutely love it. However, I… have also played all the games and been spoiled on the books (except the most recent one), so I have a good understanding of the Witcher universe as a whole. So, like, I’m not necessarily the audience at stake here with the show and it’s somewhat confusing plot for newbies. While it’s a great thing coming out for those who already love everything about the world (except the controls of the second game, FUCK those controls), it’s meant to also be enjoyable for those who don’t know anything, right? I’m not sure it managed to do that.

(I feel like it’s not that confusing, but my friend, who knows nothing of the franchise, was very confused, and I don’t know if that’s a him thing or a poor plot execution thing. He was mostly confused by Yennefer’s whole magic thing, and I definitely have to agree that they kind of skimmed over that whole part.)

For me, though, I really did like it and I really love the way they’re going with it. I was iffy on Henry Cavill as a choice for Geralt, but he’s doing him surprisingly good justice in my opinion, so I’m accepting him as my media headcanon so long as he keeps up the good work. Yennefer is also a really good cast, I feel, even if she seems a little off from her game counterpart (and I don’t mean looks-wise, she’s a little more sassy, though that could be because she’s younger), it’s not an off that doesn’t still come across as purely Yennefer.

jaskier

Jaskier… well. He definitely feels a little different from the Dandelion I know from the games, but, again, not in a way I feel Dandelion/Jaskier wouldn’t be. It’s still him, and it still feels like him. He’s clearly not as friendly with his BBFL Geralt, but it’s the start of their life together, so I guess a little turmoil is in the air before they can be the best damn friends you ever did see. No, I’m not exaggerating. Leave me alone.

(Jaskier is the BEST part of the show, fight me. I ain’t even mad they didn’t translate his name despite doing it for the games.)

(Also? This is a BOP. Can’t argue that.)

Aaaaand moving on…

Pokémon Shield (and Sword)

pokemon

This game has been getting a lot of flack (and for some good reasons, I will admit), but I, being a total slave to the franchise, bought the game anyway, and have so far logged a good 150+ hours into it according to my Switch.

… Needless to say, I’m really enjoying myself. I love the graphics. I love the mechanics.

It’s so cute.

Look at it.

I hatched a shiny Galarian Ponyta because I needed one. He’s my pride and joy.

… And yet, I can still understand the criticisms. There’s no gigantic dex for all the Pokémon, the graphics have some to be desired (or, okay, quite a lot), and they are dropping DLC for the game that could have easily been included with how short the game ended up being by the end of it. (Those 150+ hours I put into it are the outlier. It was mostly shiny hatching.)

So. I get it. I do.

I still think it was worth the buy, because I’m having a blast.

Anyway, that’s all for this post!

I’ll probably do another one of these once I manage to fully forget about them and only come to realize it’s been like a year since I last did one when the next season of something comes around and violently reminds me, but…

Until then, thanks for reading!
